The Cougars came up three points short of Magna Vista for the title but showed they are still improving and preparing for the Region IV Tournament this coming week-end. Justin Vernon (112), Chris Adkins (189), and Chris Bembry (215) captured their second Piedmont District Title as Jesse Hamm (140) and Austin Cole (152) earned their first. Tyler Watson (125) finished second. Finishing Third for the Cougars were Samantha Griffith (119), Timmy Marshall (145), Caden Womack (160), Collins Womack (171) and Clint Womack (285). Head Coach Stephen Biedrycki also was voted Piedmont Wrestling Coach of the Year by his peers. Going into the medal round PC was trailing by 31. Consolation matches were wrestled first and Samantha Griffith started the Cougar attack by pinning Munn of Bassett. Timmy Marshall and the Womack gang all followed suite with pins of their own. “Our kids wrestled great all day long but when Sam pinned her guy it was a great boast for the entire team,” assistant coach Jason Rortvedt said. The Championship Finals started with PC still down by 16. Out of 14 matches Magna Vista had 9 wrestlers compared to Patrick County’s 6. Justin Vernon continued the attack by pinning Price from Martinsville. “This was a great win for “V” in many ways; it is his Second District Title, his second win over Price this year, and also Price has been ranked as high as third in the Region in some polls,” said Rortvedt. Tyler Watson had a tough bout against Trey Devall from Tunstall and fell short in the end. “This was the third time Tyler has wrestled Devall this year and each had one win over the other. I knew it would be close because Devall is so strong on the mat. Watson just needs to bounce back next week at the Regional Tournament,” Rortvedt added. Jesse Hamm, Austin Cole, and Chris Adkins had Head to Head matches against Magna Vista and all three cougars were victorious. Adkins pinned 2008 state qualifier Curtis to improve his record to 38-2 overall and earn his second district title. The final Cougar match put Chris Bembry against Boo Woods from Bassett.
